Packages installation for PowerPC (Darwin 6 / MacOSX Jaguar)

There are many ways to begin installing pakages from The GNU-Darwin distribution :
    • The base files which include mostly the FreeBSD package manager and make utilities with which you can begin exploring the thousands of packages and the ports system.
    • The base distribution includes around 125 essential packages, many useful libraries, applications and window managers, it is a good place to start if you are not really sure what you need.
    • There are also many possibilities through CD-R, DVD-R and pre-installed hard drives available at the store. This is the best option for complete setups and for dial-up connections.
    • If you are a Darwin-x86 user, then consult the GNU-Darwin installation notes for Intel users.
    base files

The base files are everything you need to start using the package manager and the ports system.

They can be installed through the two-steps installer:

    curl http://yves.gnu-darwin.org/two-steps  -o  two-steps
    sh two-steps

Once the base files are installed, you will be asked if you want to go on with the distribution so you can just stop there.
You may also choose to restart from there at a later time.

    base distribution

The distribution consists of the base files plus 125 packages: applications, libraries and utilities.

It can be installed either through the two-steps installer:

    curl http://yves.gnu-darwin.org/two-steps  -o  two-steps
    sh two-steps
Or through the One Step Installer:
    curl http://www.gnu-darwin.org/one_stop  | csh
Two-steps is mostly a rewrite of One Step with an added facility to interrupt downloads and resume at a later time, something very handy considering the hundreds of Mb to be downloaded. Some compatibility improvements have also been included regarding Darwin 6 / MacOSX 10.2

    GNU-Darwin Office

A very interresting offer on CD-R which installs the base distribution and many other interresting packages, a total of 187 packages including the Gimp, OpenOffice and Mozilla which are not included in the base distribution because of the hudge download size involved.

Once you are done with either method, you can start using the package system

You may install new packages using pkg_add

pkg_add -rf openoffice (fetch package and installs it)
    pkg_add -f gimp-1.2.2_2.tgz (installs a local package)
man pkg_add (for a complete list of options)
You may also want to look at the downloads page which tracks interresting new packages releases.

You can also get informations about installed packages using pkg_info

pkg_info (shows short infos on all installed packages)
pkg_info -f wget-1.8.2_1 (shows what was installed where in this package)
man pkg_info (for a complete list of options)
and you can also look in /var/db/pkg which contains the database of all installed packages.
